Wines of The Odyssey: Myth, Memory, and the Ancient Mediterranean Vine
Friday September 25 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Join the Intoxicating Professor, Heather McKechney on a journey across the wine‑dark sea with Odysseus as we explore the real places, grapes, and winemaking traditions woven through Homer’s epic. This storytelling‑driven class blends mythology, ancient history, and modern Mediterranean wine, connecting legendary moments: from the Lotus‑Eaters to Circe’s island, with the regions and producers crafting wine there today!
You’ll feel like you’re on the same journey as you trace how wine shaped ancient Mediterranean culture, uncover archaeological clues about early fermentation and trade, and taste contemporary expressions from islands and coastlines that appear throughout The Odyssey. Each wine becomes a chapter: the rugged Ionian cliffs, the volcanic soils of the Aegean, the wild herbs of Crete, and the maritime breezes of the Peloponnese. To top it off, you’ll enjoy a delightful nosh plate by New York Kitchen’s Chef Pam Cecere.
By the end, you’ll not only understand the grapes and styles of these storied regions, but you’ll feel how myth and history still echo in every glass. This one isn’t to be missed if you’re a wine and history lover alike!
