Dry Law, Wet Whistles: Prohibition and the Finger Lakes
Saturday November 7 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
They tried to make America go dry. It did not go well.
Step back into the roaring, rule-breaking world of Prohibition with NYK Beverage Instructor Sandy Waters for a spirited tasting of the 14-year “Noble Experiment” that ended up being anything but noble. Along the way, you’ll learn why the 18th Amendment remains the only constitutional amendment ever repealed, and why the nation’s most ambitious attempt to ban booze may have been the best thing to ever happen to American drinking culture.
Through a flight of five perfectly legal wines and spirits, Sandy will guide you through the bootleggers, the speakeasies, the loopholes, and the sheer creative rebellion of a thirsty nation, all the way to the rebirth of the Finger Lakes wine region that became the comeback story of the era. Each pour is paired with a nosh plate from Chef Pamela Cecere, so you’ll be able to snack while you learn how everyone else got around the rules.
Sandy brings the storytelling, the surprising details, and plenty of personality. You simply need to bring the thirst.
Come curious, leave with a few good stories, and raise a glass to a history lesson that’s actually worth toasting.
