The Finger Lakes Has Arrived: A New Era of New York Wine
Saturday July 25 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
For years, the Finger Lakes has been described as an emerging wine region, but that description no longer captures the quality, momentum, and recognition happening here. The Finger Lakes has arrived.
The region has long been celebrated for Riesling and Cabernet Franc, two stalwart varieties that have brought tremendous respect to the quality of our wines and the winemaking prowess of the Finger Lakes. But the story of New York wine is much bigger, deeper, and more dynamic than these hallmark grapes alone.
In this class, we will briefly explore the history of winemaking in the Finger Lakes, reflecting on how the region came to be, the pioneers who drove its development, and the winemakers whose decades of work, experimentation, and innovation have helped bring the region to this historic moment.
From there, we will look toward the new frontier of Finger Lakes wine: increased collaboration, custom crush projects, the introduction of new vinifera varieties and hybrid grapes, and the growing presence of organic, biodynamic, and sustainable approaches to farming and winemaking.
Join NYK beverage educator Shomari Smoak, CSW, for a guided tasting of five wines that reflect both the established pillars and emerging styles expanding the identity of the region. This is a class about history, innovation, collaboration, and the future of New York wine. You’ll enjoy learning about the Finger Lakes alongside a paired nosh plate from Chef Pam Cecere.
