The Widows: Exploring the Women Who Shaped Champagne
Friday July 10 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
They were told to grieve quietly and step aside. Instead, they changed the world.
In 19th and 20th century France, a woman’s place was in the home – certainly not at the helm of a business, and never in the cellar. But when three remarkable women found themselves widowed and alone in a male-dominated industry, they didn’t just survive. They revolutionized the most celebrated wine on earth.
Join New York Kitchen’s Beverage Education Manager Jen Menges for an intimate evening of storytelling and bubbles as we raise a glass to the trailblazers behind three of Champagne’s most legendary houses. Meet the audacious Barbe-Nicole Clicquot, the Grande Dame who defied her in-laws, her era, and every expectation placed upon her. Discover Louise Pommery, the visionary widow who dared to make Champagne dry, and in doing so, gave the world the style we know and love today. And toast to the irrepressible Lily Bollinger, whose sharp wit and fierce determination carried her house from wartime survival to global icon.
Each story is paired with a glass from the very house these women built, because the best way to understand a legend is to taste her legacy.
Whether you’re a Champagne devotee or simply someone who loves a great story, preferably with bubbles, this is more than a tasting. It’s a history lesson, a celebration, and a love letter to three women who were widowed, underestimated, and utterly unstoppable. Come dressed for the occasion. The bubbles will be flowing, and the stories are nothing short of extraordinary.
These incredible Champagnes will also be paired with a plate of delights from our own Chef Pam Cecere.
