Where Delta Breezes Meet Deep Roots: A Reflection on Lodi

Friday March 6 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Join Beverage Educator Shomari Smoak, CSW (@winewithsmoak), for this enlightening beverage class about Lodi, California. In Shomari’s words:

“I’ll be the first to admit it. I arrived in Lodi with a few preconceived ideas about what this wine region was supposed to be. Like many wine drinkers, I thought I knew the story. What I found instead completely rewrote it.

This class is a reflection on my time spent in Lodi wine country with Maryam + Company’s Field Blends: Lodi, exploring a region shaped as much by its people and values as it is by its vineyards. Through stories, conversation, and five thoughtfully selected wines, we’ll taste how Lodi’s Mediterranean climate, with its warm days, cooling Delta breezes, and sandy and clay loam soils, creates far more range than what might be expected. The wines will range from high-acid, orchard-fruit-driven styles to dense, structured wines, offering a clear, delicious reminder that Lodi does not fit neatly into a single box.

Along the way, we’ll discuss the thoughtful farming and winemaking practices that quietly anchor the region, including Lodi’s leadership in sustainability through the LODI RULES certification, one of the most respected programs in the wine world. We’ll also explore how collaboration defines the culture here, with growers and winemakers working together on everything from water conservation to long-term land stewardship.

We’ll finish by highlighting the cultural diversity that gives Lodi its energy and perspective: multigenerational farming families, immigrant voices, and inclusive initiatives that are reshaping who gets to tell the story of wine.

Consider this class a relaxed and thoughtful tasting, grounded in curiosity and an openness to seeing Lodi for what it truly is!”
